We Did It! We Changed Sick Pay Legislation!

Hi Julian,

Today marks a momentous occasion. The Government have just passed legislation that will improve the sick pay of one in three employees in the UK. This is a huge win and a massive step for Safe Sick Pay in the UK.

I just want to say a massive congratulations to everyone that has been part of making this happen. A huge well done on all of your hard work, including those that wrote to their MP, met with their MP, spoke in the press, shared their story on social media, spoke at a hustings, and more. This is a huge gain on the road to a just sick pay system and these changes will make a massive difference to people’s lives.

The Employment Rights Bill, that has just been approved by Parliament, will see almost 10 million employees gain better Statutory Sick Pay. The changes include:

  1. All employees will be eligible for Statutory Sick Pay, ensuring that the 1.3 million low-income employees, that were left out of the sick pay system will now be included.
  2. Statutory Sick Pay will be paid from the first day of illness, rather than the 4th day as it is now, which will mean that one in three employees will receive three extra days of sick pay.
  3. For the 1 million lowest-income earners, they will receive 80% of their wages as Statutory Sick Pay.
  4. The Fair Work Agency will be set up, which will enforce Statutory Sick Pay legislation and ensure that employers are adhering to the rules.

These changes will come in from the 1st April 2026. Please take a moment to celebrate with us on the practical improvement it will make in terms of more money in workers pockets.
