Celebration in Parliament as ten million people get better sick pay rights

The Safe Sick Pay campaign held a celebration Parliament to welcome the changes to Statutory Sick Pay that the coalition successfully campaigned on - millions of workers have benefited from the new sick pay changes, introduced by the Government from April 6 2026.

Speakers included the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Lucy Powell MP; Baroness O'Grady; Ros Wynne-Jones from the Mirror; Tony Pullen and Sofia Torres from our Experts by Experience Board; and Nil Güzelgün from Mind.

Since earlier this month, four big changes to sick pay are now in force, improving the sick pay of 10 million employees in the UK. These include sick pay from the first day of sickness absence, rather than day four, and ensuring that all employees are eligible for sick pay, extending coverage to nearly 2 million more employees.

We couldn't be prouder of the successful campaign we have run together. These changes to sick pay will make a real tangible difference to workers across the UK, ensuring they have more financial security when they fall ill.

We want to say a massive well done to everyone that took part in the campaign. It was the collective effort from our cross-party alliance of workers, civil society organisations, trade unions, MP, Peers, businesses, the campaign funders and more that made these changes a reality.

The campaign continues and we look forward to continuing to work together to ensure that all workers have the sick pay they need.
