Safe Sick Pay
The Issues
There are three key issues with Statutory Sick Pay (SSP):-
- SSP is paid from the 4th day that one is sick, which means that one must lose 3 days’ pay before receiving it.
- 1.5 million workers are not eligible for any sick pay because they earn below the Lower Earnings Limit of £123 per week with their employer.
- SSP is £116.75 a week, which is far too low a rate to survive on.
Recommended Policy Reforms
- Abolish the Lower Earnings Limit for Statutory Sick Pay, extending coverage to almost two million workers.
- Remove the waiting period for sick pay for all absences, so that people receive pay from the first day that they are sick.
- Increase sick pay so that it is in line with an employee’s wages, up to the real living wage.
Who supports this?
This campaign has cross-party support. It also has support from businesses and business groups such as Legal & General and CIPD, trade unions such as the TUC, UNISON and Unite, as well as many health charities and disability charities.
Over the last year Centre For Progressive Change has built a national campaign calling for a Safe Sick Pay; that the government should address the above challenges with the proposed solutions. We believe it is Good for Employees, Affordable for Employers and a Saver for Government.
